Description

Teaching portion-size awareness is easy with this activity set of 12 faux foods. Four common foods (beef, spaghetti, peanuts, and orange juice) come in three sizes, each labeled by size and number of calories. Presenters can use these faux foods in nine hands-on activities detailed in the activity guide. Each activity helps learners gain insight about portion size. For example, in Find That Portion, learners compare three different portion sizes of the same faux food. They are asked to choose the one that represents the portion size the presenter names. Once learners have made their guess, they can receive immediate feedback by turning over their choice to read the size label. If they have guessed incorrectly, they can use the size labels on the other options to find the correct portion size. Comparing and contrasting their choice with the correct one gives them new insight into how their portion size expectations meet with real-life options. The eight other activities detailed in the activity guide are: - Portion Perfection (teaches learners to choose a target portion size); - Guess Your Grub (asks learners to guess the portion sizes the faux foods represent); - Weigh the Plate (teaches learners how plate size affects their portion size estimations); - The Protein Shuffle (helps learners compare and contrast portions of beef and peanuts using MyPyramid ounce equivalents); - Count Your Carbs (uses carbohydrate information to help learners estimate the ounce equivalents in a restaurant portion of spaghetti); - Find the Fat (uses fat information to help learners estimate the fat in a restaurant portion of beef); - Count Your Calories (uses calorie information to help learners estimate the weight gain from extra calorie consumption of orange juice); - Eyeballing It (teaches visual measuring techniques to help learners estimate a beef portion and a spaghetti portion).
